Indian Women's Table Tennis: A Decade of Success

Indian Women’s Table Tennis has gained significant prominence in the last two decades. It all began when India started winning in doubles and team events during the Commonwealth Games. Mouma Das was the first star of India Women’s Table Tennis. She has won multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games, including a silver medal in the women’s team competition and a quarterfinalist spot in the women’s singles event.  She also won the women’s doubles event at the 2017 World Table Tennis Championships alongside her partner Manika Batra. The duo became the first Indian pair to win a medal in the event (a historic feat of over 61 years).

In 2018, Manika Batra won the Gold medal in Commonwealth Games Singles, further cementing India’s position in the sport.  Manika Batra is currently ranked number 39 in ITTF as of May 2023. Srtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee became India’s first women’s doubles pair to win a bronze in women’s table tennis medal at the Asian Games and added another glorious chapter.

Top Indian Players in 2024

Manika Batra

Manik BatraManika Batra is the top-ranked female table tennis player in India and ranked 63rd in the world. She won three medals at the 2015 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, winning silver in the women’s team event as well as the women’s doubles event and bronze in the women’s singles event. In the 2018 Commonwealth Games, She won gold in singles & led the Indian women’s team to a gold in the Team event and silver in the Women’s Double. She received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2020.

Sreeja Akula

sreeja akulaSreeja Akula is a highly accomplished tennis player, currently holding the national championship titles in both Women’s singles and doubles. She won these titles at the 83rd Senior National and Inter-State Table Tennis Championships. Additionally, she was a key member of the Indian team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she won a gold medal in mixed doubles with Sharath Kamal. In 2019, she also earned gold medals in Women’s Doubles and Women’s Team events at the South Asian Games. She is set to represent India in Singles, Doubles, and Team Events in 2022 Asiad Games.

Sutirtha Mukherjee

SutirathSutirtha Mukherjee represented India in Doubles and Team Events. In the 2023 Asian Games, she along with Ayhika Mukherjee won the Bronze medal in the Women’s Double Event. She has won the national Table Tennis Championship and also was a part of the Gold medal-winning Indian women’s team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.  Along with her teammate Ayhika, she recently won India’s first-ever women’s doubles World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender title in Tunis. India is optimistic that the pair will be able to secure a medal for the country at the Asian Games.

Ayhika Mukherjee

Ayhika Mukherjee represents India in Doubles and Team Events. In the 2023 Asian Games, she along with Sutirtha Mukherjee won the Bronze medal in the Women’s Double Event. Previously along with her teammate Sutirthala, she won India’s first-ever women’s doubles World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender title in Tunis. 

Diya Chitale

Diya Chitale, an emerging star of Indian table tennis, has been trained in India, Japan, and Germany. She is set to represent India in the 2022 Asian Games in China. She will pair with Sreeja Akula  in the doubles event and also part of the Team event,
