Indian women have always made us proud in the field of sports. Whether it’s athletics, boxing, badminton, shooting, wrestling, or tennis, they have excelled in every sport. They have won medals in every international sporting event, including the World Championships, Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games.
From P.T. Usha’s prowess in sprinting to Mary Kom’s brilliance in boxing and P.V. Sindhu’s dominance in badminton, these women have proven that with dedication, talent, and hard work, they can conquer any field. Even in 2023, women athletes in India continue to excel, rewriting records, and leaving an indelible mark on the global sporting arena.

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, Badminton
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is the first Indian to become the Badminton World Champion (2019) and an Olympic silver medal (2016). Pusarla won her first Super Series title at the 2016 China Open and followed it up with four more finals in 2017, winning the titles in South Korea and India. She has also won a silver medal each at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Asian Games, and two bronze medals at the Uber Cup. She is the recipient of the sports honor Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Shri & Padma Bhushan.

Lovlina Borgohain, Boxing
Lovlina Borgohain is India’s top boxer who participates in the women’s boxing (69 Kg) category. She achieved a bronze medal in the women’s welterweight event at the 2020 Olympic Games, making her the third Indian boxer to receive an Olympic medal. Lovlina Borgohain has also made history by becoming the first woman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics. Her outstanding performance has earned her the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2020.

Nikhat Zareen, Boxing
Nikhat Zareen is an Indian boxer and a 2-time world champion. She will represent India in Women’s Wrestling (60 Kg) at the 2022 Asiad Games to be held in Hangzhou, Japan. In the 2022 Istanbul and 2023 New Delhi IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, she emerged victorious, earning gold medals. She also secured a gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. In the past, she won a gold medal at the 2011 AIBA Women’s Youth and Junior World Boxing Championships, which took place in Antalya.
Mirabai Chanu, Weightlifting
Mirabai Chanu is a trailblazing Indian athlete who made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic weightlifting medal since Karnam Malleshwari. Chanu is the current world record holder in the Clean & Jerk category in the 49 kg weight class. During the Women’s Weightlifting 49kg Event, Chanu won a Silver medal by successfully lifting 87kg in snatch and 115kg in Jerk, with a total of 202 Kg.

Jyothi Yarraji - Athletics
Jyothi Yarraji is a track and field athlete who specializes in the 100-metre hurdles. She currently holds the Indian national record for the 100 m hurdles, with a time of 13.23 seconds. Jyothi represented India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the 100-meter hurdles and was also part of the Indian Women’s 4 x 100-meter relay team, which finished 5th in the finals. In the upcoming 2023 Asiad Games, she will be representing India in the 200 m and 100 m hurdles events.
Parul Chaudhary - Athletics
Parul Chaudhary is a track and field athlete who specializes in the 5000-meter and 3000-meter Steeplechase. She won a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships women’s 3000 meters steeplechase and silver in the 5000 meters. She will represent India in the 5000-meter and 3000-meter Steeplechase events at the 2022 Asiad Games.
Bala Devi, Footballer
Bala Devi, a footballer from Manipur became the first Indian woman to sign for a European club when she signed a contract with the Scottish team, Rangers Women’s FC in January 2020. She also became the first Indian woman to score a goal in a European league. She was also named as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) International Player of the Week ahead of the likes of Son Heung-Min and Sam Kerr.

Harmanpreet Kaur, Cricket
Harmanpreet Kaur is currently the captain of the India Women’s National Cricket Team. She is one of the top Indian batsmen and made history by becoming the first woman from India to score a century in a Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) match. In addition, she is the leading run-scorer in T20 and second in One Day Internationals, just behind Mithali Raj.
In February 2023, in the inaugural WPL auction, she was bought by Mumbai Indians for ₹1.80 crores. The Mumbai Indians, captained by her, went on to win the inaugural WPL.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam , Archery
Jyothi Surekha Vennam is a Top Indian archer and she will represent India in the 2022 Asiad Games. She is a Gold medalist in the Compound archery event at the World Cup both in the individual (2023) and mixed team events. In 2023, she became the first Indian archer along with teammates Aditi Gopichand Swami and Parneet Kaur to win a gold medal at the World Archery Championships defeating Mexico by a score of 235-229 in the Compound Women’s Team final.

Aditi Swami, Archery
Aditi Swami is a young Indian archer and she will represent India in the 2022 Asiad Games. She became India’s first-ever individual world champion at the senior level when she won the Gold in the Compound Women’s final at the 2023 World Archery Championships. She was also a double medalist at the 2023 World Archery Youth Championships, winning individual and team golds. In 2023, she along with teammates Jyothi Surekha and Parneet Kaur won a gold medal at the World Archery Championships defeating Mexico by a score of 235-229 in the Compound Women’s Team final.
Manu Bhaker, Shooting
Manu Bhaker is an Indian Olympian who plays airgun shooting. She represented India at the 2018 ISSF World Cup and became the youngest Indian to win two gold medals. She won the gold medal in the women’s 10 m air pistol event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games just at the age of 16.

Esha Singh, Shooting
Esha Singh is the national champion in the 10m Air Pistol category in 2018. She won a silver medal at Junior World Cup at Suhl, Germany (2019) , two gold medals at Asian Junior Championships. Besides 10m Air Pistol, she also competes in 25m Standard Pistol and 25m Pistol events.
Manika Batra, Table Tennis
Manika Batra is the top-ranked female table tennis player in India and ranked 63rd in the world. She won three medals at the 2015 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, winning silver in the women’s team event as well as the women’s doubles event and bronze in the women’s singles event. In the 2018 Commonwealth Games, She won gold in singles & led the Indian women’s team to a gold in the Team event and silver in the Women’s Double. She received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2020.

Rani Rampal, Hockey
Rani Rampal is the Captain of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team. At the age of 15, she was the youngest player in the national team which participated in the 2010 World Cup. She has played 212 international matches and scored 134 goals. In 2020, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri.
Sonam Malik, Wrestling
Sonam Malik is a highly accomplished wrestler who proudly represents India in the 62 kg category for women’s wrestling. She has won numerous accolades including a gold medal at the National Games and two gold medals at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship. Notably, in 2020, she defeated the 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist, Sakshi Malik, twice.

Antim Panghal, Wrestling
Antim Panghal is a freestyle wrestler from Hissar and she represents India in the women’s 53 kg wrestling event. She is India’s first-ever U-20 world wrestling champion and She also won a silver medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship 2023. Currently, she is part of India’s 2022 Asian Games squad and is considered a strong contender for a medal.
Bhavani Devi, Fencing
Bhavani Devi is a top fencer in India and she made history by becoming the first-ever Indian fencer to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games in March 2021. She has won a bronze medal in the 2023 Wuxi Asian Championship, a silver medal in the 2019 Tournoi Satellite Fencing Competition, and a gold medal at the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship.
Nethra Kumanan, Sailing
Nethra Kumanan became the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics at the Mussanah Open Championship 2021 in April. She won a World Cup medal in sailing. She has competed under the Indian flag in the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games and also in the 2020 Sailing World Cup & the first Indian woman to win a World Cup medal in sailing. She clinched a bronze medal in the 2020 Sailing World Cup in Miami, USA.
Ankita Raina, Tennis
Ankita Raina is currently the highest-ranked female tennis player in India. She has been the Indian number one in both singles and doubles since 2018. Raina has won a title on the WTA Tour and one at WTA 125 tournaments (both in doubles), along with 11 singles and 25 doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.
Pranati Nayak, Gymnast
Pranati Nayak is an artistic gymnast and will represent India in the 2023 Asiad Games. She is the 2019 Asian Championships vault bronze medalist. She is the third Indian gymnast to win an international medal on the vault, after Dipa Karmakar and Aruna Reddy. She represented India at the 2020 Summer Olympics and is only the second Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games.
