Top Female Boxers in India

In the last decade boxing is one sport in which Indian women have made a tremendous stride. It all started with Sarita Devi, Jenny R Lalremliani, and Lekha KC becoming world champions and winning Gold medals in the Women’s World Amateur Boxing Championships. Later Mary Kom won bronze in the 2012 Summer Olympics and dominated world boxing by becoming the World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times. 

In 2020, Lovlina Borgohain won a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in the women’s welterweight event, becoming only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. In 2022, Nikhat Zareen also joined the elite list of Indian boxers by winning the World Championships.  Apart from this, in the last few years, Indian women’s boxers have won medals in the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, and the Asian Games.

Lovlina Borgohain

Lovelina

Lovlina Borgohain is a talented Indian boxer who made history by winning a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in the women’s welterweight event. She is only the third Indian boxer ever to achieve this feat! She also won a Silver in Women’s 75 kg in 2022 Asian Games.

In addition to her Olympic success, Borgohain has also won a bronze medal at the 2018 and 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and a gold medal at the 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament held in New Delhi. As a trailblazer for women’s boxing in her home state of Assam, Borgohain is also the first woman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics. Furthermore, she was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2020.

Mary Kom

Mary KomMary Kom Nicknamed Magnificent Mary, is the first Indian female boxer to have won a medal, a Bronze in the Summer Olympics 2012, and ranked as the world’s No. 1 female light-flyweight by the International Boxing Association (AIBA). She competes in the flyweight (51 kg) category the only female to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times, the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to win eight World Championship medals. She became the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal in the Asian Games in 2014 at Incheon, South Korea, and is the first Indian female boxer to win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She is also the only boxer to become the Asian Amateur Boxing Champion for a record six times. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2020.

Nikhat Zareen

Nikhat ZareenNikhat Zareen is a two-time gold medallist at the world championships and the reigning Commonwealth Games champion. She also won a bronze in Women’s 50 kg in the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. Earlier In the 2022 Istanbul and 2023 New Delhi IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, she emerged victorious, earning gold medals. She also secured a gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. In the past, she won a gold medal at the 2011 AIBA Women’s Youth and Junior World Boxing Championships, which took place in Antalya.

Nitu Ghanghas

Nitu Ghanghas is the 2023 world champion in the minimumweight (48kg) category and a two-time world youth champion in the light flyweight. She won the gold medal at the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the minimumweight category.

Saweety Boora

Saweety Boora competes in the middleweight weight class category. She won the gold medal at the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and silver medal class at the 2014 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in the light heavyweight category. 

Preeti Pawar

Preeti Pawar will represent India in Women’s Wrestling (54 Kg). She won a Bronze in Women’s 54 kg in the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China.

Parveen Hooda

Parveen Hooda will represent India in Women’s Wrestling 57 Kg. She won a Bronze in Women’s 57 kg in the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. Earlier  She won a gold medal at the 2019 South Asian Games and the bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships.

Jaismine Lamboria

Jaismine Lamboria is a lightweight-category Indian boxer and will represent India in Women’s Wrestling (60 Kg) at the 2022 Asiad Games to be held in Hangzhou, China. She participated in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where she won a bronze medal.

Arundhati Choudhary

Arundhati Chaudhary will represent India in Women’s Wrestling (66 Kg) at the 2022 Asiad Games to be held in Hangzhou, China. She has won a gold medal in Youth World Championship 2021 in Kielce, Poland.

Simranjit Kaur

Simranjit KaurSimranjit Kaur, an Indian boxer, competed in the Women’s 60 Kg category at the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics. She has earned several notable achievements in her career, such as winning a bronze medal at the Youth World Championship in 2013, a bronze at the Senior International Championship in Kazakhstan in 2017, and a bronze at her World Championship in New Delhi in 2019. Additionally, she has won a silver at both the 2021 Asian Championships and the Boxam International Tournament in Spain.

Pooja Rani

Pooja RaniPooja Rani Bohra is a skilled middleweight boxer weighing 75 kg and proudly represented India in the 2020 Summer Olympics. She has achieved various medals in her career, including a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games, a gold medal in the South Asian Games of 2016, and a silver and bronze medal in the 2012 and 2015 Asian Championships, respectively.
