Did you know that Badminton is the second most played sport in India after Cricket? In fact, Badminton was Developed in the City of Poona by British Indian Army officers.

Saina Nehwal is the first female player from India to achieve the world no. 1 spot, which she did in April 2015, and the first Indian badminton player to win a medal at the Olympic Games.  P. V. Sindhu is the first Indian to become the badminton World Champion, which she achieved in 2019, and the only badminton player from India to win two consecutive medals at the Olympic Games.

The most successful doubles player from India is Jwala Gutta, who is the only Indian to have been ranked in the top 10 of two categories. She peaked at no. 6 with Valiyaveetil Diju in mixed doubles and at no. 10 with Ashwini Ponnappa in women’s doubles.

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu

PV SindguPusarla Venkata Sindhu is the first Indian to become the Badminton World Champion (2019) and an Olympic silver medal (2016).  Pusarla won her first Super Series title at the 2016 China Open and followed it up with four more finals in 2017, winning the titles in South Korea and India. She has also won a silver medal each at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Asian Games, and two bronze medals at the Uber Cup. With earnings of US$8.5 million, $5.5 million, $7.2 million, and $7.1 million respectively, Sindhu made the Forbes list of Highest-Paid Female Athletes in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. She is the recipient of the sports honor Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna,  Padma Shri, and Padma Bhushan.

Ashmita Chaliha

Ashmita Chaliha is a rising star in the world of badminton, representing India internationally and achieving notable successes. In 2018, she won her first senior international title at the Dubai International Challenge in the women’s singles category. She also won gold medals at the 2019 South Asian Games in both the women’s singles and team events. Ashmita has been selected to represent India in the upcoming 2022 Asian Games, which will be held in China, in both the Single and Team Events.

Anupama Upadhyaya

Anupama Upadhyaya is a former BWF World Junior Number 1 and currently represents India in badminton. In 2023, she became the Indian National Badminton Champion in women’s singles. Meanwhile, Ashmita Chaliha has been selected to represent India in the Team Event at the upcoming 2022 Asian Games, which will be held in China.

Malvika Bansod

Malvika Bansod is a talented badminton player who has already achieved several impressive international titles, including the Maldives and Nepal International in 2019. She has also won numerous gold medals in both junior and senior categories at national-level events. Bansod has been selected to represent India in the upcoming 2022 Asian Games, specifically in the Team Event, which will be held in China.

Treesa Jolly

Treesa Jolly is a young badminton player who represents India in doubles and team events. She partnered with Gayatri Gopichand to win a bronze medal in doubles at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and was also part of the silver-winning Indian team. She has been selected to be a part of the Indian squad that will participate in the 2022 Asian Games which is going to be held in China.

Gayatri Gopichand

Pullela Gayatri Gopichand is the daughter of former badminton players P. V. V. Lakshmi and Pullela Gopichand. She was part of the national team that clinched the women’s team gold medal at the 2019 South Asian Games, and a silver in the women’s singles She partnered with Teresa Jolly to win a bronze medal in doubles at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and was also part of the silver-winning Indian team. She has been selected to be a part of the Indian squad that will participate in the 2022 Asian Games which is going to be held in China.

Ashwini Ponnappa

Ashwini Ponnappa is a badminton player who represents India in both the women’s and mixed doubles categories at international tournaments. She has had a successful partnership with Jwala Gutta, and together they have won several medals in international events. They won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and bronze medals at the Uber Cup and the Asian Badminton Championships. In the upcoming 2022 Asian Games, Ashwini Ponnappa will partner with Tanisha Crasto for the Women’s Doubles category.

Tanisha Crasto is a badminton player who represents India in both the women’s and mixed doubles categories at international tournaments. In the upcoming 2022 Asian Games, Tanisha Crasto will partner with Ashwini Ponnappa for the Women’s Doubles category.

Manasi Girishchandra Joshi, Para-Badminton

Manasi Girishchandra Joshi is a para-badminton player, the current World Champion & ranked world no. 2 in women’s singles (SL3 category i.e standing/lower limb impairment/minor). After meeting with a road accident in 2011, She started her professional sporting journey in 2015 &  listed as the Next Generation Leader 2020 by TIME Magazine in October 2020 &  appeared on their Asia cover. On the occasion of the International Day of Girl Child, Barbie celebrated Manasi and her achievements by modeling a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll to her likeness to inspire young girls. She has also been recognized by BBC as one of the 100 most inspirational & powerful women across the world in 2020 and was nominated for the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award 2020 along side PV Sindhu, Mary Kom, Vinesh Phogat and Dutee Chand.

The Complete list of players who will represent India in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, from 23 September 2023 to 8 October 2023. (Earlier the event was scheduled to be held in September 2022 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic cases rising in China, the event was postponed and rescheduled to September–October 2023.
