Meet the Indian Female Wrestling Stars

Wrestling as a sport is deep-rooted and has a long history in India.  In Mahabharata, Bhima was considered to be a great wrestler of the time, and some of the other great wrestlers included Jarasandha, Keechaka, and Balrama. Ramayana also mentions wrestling in India and Hanuman is described as one of the greatest wrestlers of his time. In the last decade, women’s wrestling in India has come to the fore. The performances of the female wrestlers on the international stage have been nothing short of phenomenal and it has helped establish them as the stars of the sport in India.

Indian women wrestlers have won numerous medals in international wrestling competitions. Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat won Gold medals at the 2009 Commonwealth Championship. In 2010, Geeta Phogat created history by becoming the first female Indian wrestler to win gold at the Commonwealth Games. Babita Phogat won her first Commonwealth Games gold in 2014. Sakshi Malik won silver medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2015 Asian Championships & The first female Indian wrestler to win an Olympic medal by winning the Bronze in Rio Olympics 2016.

Sonam Malik

Sonam Malik

Sonam Malik, a wrestler from Sonipat, represents India in the 62 kg women’s wrestling category. She has won a gold medal at the National Games and two gold medals at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship. In 2020, she defeated Sakshi Malik, a bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, twice. The first win came in January during trials for the Asian Championship, while the second came during selection for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in February. Sonam Malik staved off a spirited challenge from China’s Jia Long to win a bronze medal in the women’s 62kg at the Asian Games,

Pooja Gehlot

Pooja Gehlot

Pooja Gehlot is a freestyle wrestler who represents India in the women’s 50 kg wrestling event. She won a bronze medal in the same event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England. Additionally, she won a silver medal in the 53 kg category at the 2019 U23 World Wrestling Championships. Currently, she is part of India’s 2022 Asian Games squad and is considered a strong contender for a medal.

Antim Panghal is a freestyle wrestler from Hissar and she represents India in the women’s 53 kg wrestling event. She is India’s first-ever U-20 world wrestling champion and She also won a silver medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship 2023. She won a bronze medal in the women’s 53kg at the Asian Games.

Kiran Bishnoi

Kiran Bishnoi is a freestyle wrestler from Hissar, Haryana, and represents India in the 76kg event. She won a bronze in the 2022 Asian Games. Earlier She was a bronze medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She has also been a gold medallist at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in 2017. 

Anshu Malik

Anshu Malik

Anshu Malik is a freestyle wrestler and he made history by becoming the first Indian wrestler to win a silver medal at the World Wrestling Championships in Oslo, Norway in 2021, where she competed in the women’s 57 kg event. In 2020, Anshu won a bronze medal in the same event at the Asian Wrestling Championships, as well as a silver medal in the women’s 57 kg event at the Individual Wrestling World Cup. She continued her winning streak at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2021, where she won the gold medal. Anshu’s recent achievement includes winning a bronze medal in the 57 kg event at the 2022 Asian Wrestling Championships in April.

Sarita Mor

Sarita Mor

Sarita Mor is a freestyle wrestler (59kg) from Sonipat, Haryana. She won the silver medal at the 2017 Asian Wrestling Championships and the gold medal at the 2020  & 2021 Asian Wrestling Championships in the 59 kg weight class. In 2021, she won the silver medal in the 57 kg event at the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series 2021 held in Rome, Italy.

Nisha Dahiya competed at the 2021 U23 World Wrestling Championships, winning the bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 65 kg event. She competed at the 2022 World Wrestling Championships in the women’s freestyle 68 kg event, losing in the bronze medal match. She won Silver Medal in Asian Championship 2023.

Divya Kakran (born 1998) is a freestyle wrestler &  has won 60 medals, including 17 gold medals in the Delhi State Championship, and Bharat Kesari title multiple times. She has won gold in 2017 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships; Silver in 2017 Asian Wrestling Championships; bronze in 2018 Asian Games & Gold in 2020 & 2021 Asian Championship

 

Sakshi Malik

Sakshi Malik

Sakshi Malik (born 3 September 1992) first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category. She had previously won the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha.

Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat (born 25 August 1994) is the first Indian woman wrestler to win Gold in both Commonwealth and Asian games & First Indian Athlete to be Nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards (2019). She will represent India at Tokyo Olympics 2021. She won the bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 48 kg category 2014 Asian Games (Incheon, South Korea); Silver in 2015 Asian Championships( Doha); gold medal in women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling at 2018 Commonwealth Games; gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games; Bronze medal at World Championship.

Pinki Wrestler

Pinki

Pinki (born 1996) is a promising wrestler from Rohtak, Haryana. She won gold in the women’s 55kg final at the Asian Championships 2020 & thus become  third Indian woman to win gold in the history of the tournament. She also won Silver Medal, Junior Asian Championship 2016;  Gold Medal at Commonwealth Championship 2016  & Gold Medal at Commonwealth Championship 2017.
