India's Best Women's Hockey Players
Hockey is considered the national sport of India. The Indian men’s hockey team is the most successful side in the history of the Olympics, having won eight gold, one silver, and three bronze medals. India has produced some of the best field hockey players in the world, including the legendary Dhyan Chand, Balbir Singh Sr, and Dhanraj Pillai. Similarly, Rani Devi, Sanggai Chanu, Jyoti Sunita Kullu, and Mamta Kharab are a few of the top women hockey players that India has produced.
In recent years, the Women’s Hockey Team has made significant progress and is now considered a dominant force in Asia, ranking as the top team, and winning the Bronze medal in the 2022 Asian Games. India at the 2020 Summer Olympics for the first time ever, reached the semi-final in the Women’s Hockey Olympic event but failed to bag any medals after they lost to Argentina in the semi-final and then to Great Britain in the bronze medal match. Following their performance at the Olympics, the team went on to win bronze medals at the 2022 Asia Cup and the Commonwealth Games and a third-place finish in the 2021–22 Pro League. In 2022 India won the first ever FIH Women’s Nations Cup.
Past Performances
The team’s breakthrough performance came at the Women’s Hockey World Cup at Mandelieu in 1974, where it finished in 4th place. Their best performance in the Olympic Games was at the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics (where they came in 4th). The team also won the Gold medal at the inaugural 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi, defeating Korea in the finals.
Captain Suraj Lata Devi led the team to the Gold for three consecutive years at different events- during the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, and the 2004 Women’s Hockey Asia Cup. In the 2014 Asian Games, Incheon stunned Japan 2–1 in a tight match to clinch their third bronze medal at the Asian Games.

Savita Punia is the captain of the women’s hockey team and she will lead the side in the 2022 Asian Games, while Deep Grace Ekka will be her deputy. Other top stars in recent times are Rani Rampal, Vandana Katariya, Sushila Chanu, Monika Malik, and Navjot Kaur.

Rani Rampal
Rani Rampal is the former Captain of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team. At the age of 15, she was the youngest player in the national team which participated in the 2010 World Cup. She is the top Goal scorer for India and has played 254 international matches and scored 120 goals. In 2020, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri.
Savita Punia
Savita Punia plays as the goalkeeper and She is currently the Captain of the Indian National women’s hockey team. She is also known as the “Great Wall of India” because of her phenomenal and outstanding performance in the 2020 Summer Olympics. She was a part of the Indian team that won a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games; Silver in the 2018 Asian Games and represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She played a key role in helping India win the bronze medal at the eighth edition of the Women’s Asia Cup in 2013 and was also a part of the team that won the gold medal in the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in 2016. Savita was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2018.
Vandana Katariya
Vandana Katariya plays as a forward in the Indian national team. She rose to prominence in 2013, being India’s top goal-scorer in the 2013 Women’s Hockey Junior World Cup, where India won a bronze medal; she scored five goals in the tournament, the third by any player. Kataria has played the most number of matches by any Indian women in the senior national team i.e. 290 international matches and scored 87 goals.
She was a part of the Indian team that won a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games; Silver in the 2018 Asian Games and represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In March 2022, Kataria was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in recognition of her distinguished contribution to the field of sports.
Deep Grace Ekka
Deep Grace Ekka is one of the best female defenders in Women’s Hockey. She doubles up as a drag-flicker and scored 20 goals for India in International matches. She was a part of the Indian team that won a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games; Silver in the 2018 Asian Games and represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Sushila Chanu
Sushila Chanu, who plays as half back is one of the senior and experienced members of team India. She was the captain of the Indian junior women’s team which won the bronze medal at the Women’s Hockey Junior World Cup in Germany in 2013. She also captained the Indian women’s hockey team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and part of India’s important gold medal win at the 2017 Asia Cup. She was part of India’s victory at the FIH Series Finals as well as the FIH Olympic Qualifiers in Bhubaneswar, India. She also played a key role at the Tokyo Olympics and then featured in India’s line-up at the Women’s Asia Cup in 2021.
