Meet the Tennis Queens: Notable Women Players of the Year

Tennis is a popular racket sport in India, although the country has only had moderate success on the international level. Nevertheless, the Indian Davis Cup team remains the most successful Davis Cup team in Asia and has finished as runners-up three times. In women’s tennis, India has produced several players who have gained international recognition and competed in prestigious events such as grand slams. Nirupama Sanjeev and Shika Uberoi were among the first Indian women to make their mark in international tournaments, breaking into the top 200 rankings by the WTA. Later, Sania Mirza achieved major success and became an inspiration for young girls to play tennis.

Sania was the first woman to enter the top 100 of the WTA singles rankings, win a WTA singles tournament, win the year-ending WTA Finals (doubles), and win a Slam of any type. At one point, she was the doubles world No. 1, and she has won six major titles, three in women’s doubles and three in mixed doubles. From 2003 until her retirement from singles in 2013, the Women’s Tennis Association ranked her as the No. 1 Indian in singles. Throughout her career, Mirza has established herself as one of the most well-known, highest-paid, and influential athletes in India.
